The TikTok economy and the content commerce trend
Information, entertainment, and commerce come together and provoke transformation in consumption patterns

Two recent and trending concepts in the digital universe are the TikTok economy and content commerce. Data from Kantar Ibope Media (2023) points to the rise of TikTok, classifying it as the third platform in terms of video audience in Brazil. Another survey, by Data AI, estimates that in 2024 TikTok should become the app with the largest accumulated revenue in history. By the end of this year, the amount is expected to reach the extraordinary mark of US$ 14.6 billion in accumulated revenue on the App Store (Apple) and Play Store (Google) apps.
Given all this, the TikTok economy is advancing and promises to change the way we see and do commerce online. It is an economic ecosystem that develops around the influence and economic impact generated by the platform. This economy encompasses various facets, including the intersection between entertainment and commerce, the significant role of creators, the tools launched by the network (such as the marketplace for content creators), brands and digital marketing companies, as well as the economic boost resulting from activities such as live commerce.
In this context, the emerging trend of content commerce gains ground and redefines the online commerce landscape. This concept refers to commerce stimulated by content, media, and entertainment, an innovative approach that places these three elements at the center of the shopping experience and engages the consumer through narratives, useful information, and entertainment.
In the case of TikTok, what is an advantage is also a challenge, meaning that user attention spans are very short, and brands have only a few seconds to capture the interest of the audience. This characteristic requires businesses to create creative content within a very short timeframe. Therefore, for content to translate into conversions and sales, brands need to create materials that combine entertainment and information adapted to the TikTok medium, being both engaging and commercially effective. For example: imagine a sustainable fashion store that uses TikTok as a platform to create videos about sustainability, educating and raising consumer awareness about ethical environmental practices through lighthearted and authentic content. This same store works collaboratively with influencers, who share the same values aligned with sustainability and recommend products naturally, within the context of the content, without the burden of direct advertising. This is what content commerce does within the TikTok ecosystem: interaction between entertainment, content, influencers, and practices like live commerce, the main source of sales for the tool known as TikTok Shop, which allows products to be sold directly on the platform.

Live commerce emerges as a powerful catalyst for the buying journey. This modality, which combines the spontaneity of live video with the possibility of real-time purchases, becomes a digital-social event, where influencers and brands create immersive and interactive experiences, making the audience not just spectators, but active participants.
The purchase journey, traditionally segmented into stages of awareness, consideration, and decision, becomes almost instantaneous. The user is emotionally engaged with the content and, driven by urgency and collective engagement, is led to make an immediate purchase decision. Thus, content commerce can shorten the customer’s purchase journey.
And, speaking of the purchase journey, in the TikTok ecosystem it does not follow a linear path anymore. In fact, this happens in other digital environments as well. These stages end up intertwining in a continuous cycle, and often, the journey stages occur at the same time. All of this is driven by content, which acts as a strategic touchpoint, connecting these phases in a fluid and often imperceptible way.
For example, a short video showing an influencer using a product can simultaneously generate awareness, increase consideration, and, through a direct purchase link or a live commerce session, lead to the purchase decision.
The success of content commerce requires brands to adopt a content strategy that is both planned and agile. Creating content series that follow a continuous narrative, holding regular events, partnering with content creators, and cultivating niche communities are tactics that can effectively map and optimize the customer journey on TikTok.
And there is another important point. TikTok stands out for its high level of engagement and strong sense of community. Users share their experiences and trust the opinions of others, which gives the platform significant viral power. In this context, the concept of community commerce stands out, which highlights the strength of communities as drivers of consumption. Unlike traditional e-commerce, which focuses on the transaction, community commerce values relationships and trust among members of a community.
On TikTok, this is particularly evident, as the platform facilitates the creation and strengthening of communities around shared interests, especially through the use of hashtags, which help brands encourage users to share their stories about a certain topic, creating a movement that can go beyond simple sales and become a social movement with real impact on the community. This type of deep engagement is what differentiates community commerce and shows how communities are powerful levers for content commerce.
Beyond traditional commerce, content commerce is not limited to a transaction. It represents a significant shift in the buying journey, which now also takes place within narratives created by brands and content producers. It also involves the transformation of an entertainment platform into a complete ecosystem of shopping experiences, redefining the meanings of engagement and commerce, and ushering in a new era of connection between brands and consumers. And this is the current digital landscape, which challenges companies to rethink how they operate in the market. Content commerce is an evolution of how consumption occurs in this era of convergence, where information, entertainment, and commerce happen simultaneously within an ecosystem that drives new forms of social and commercial interaction. Understanding this landscape, adopting strategies, and adapting will be fundamental for brands aiming to grow within this new economy.
